Job Summary
The Employee Relations Manager plays a key role in fostering a positive, fair, and consistent workplace culture across assigned geographic regions. Reporting to the HR Director, this position is responsible for managing employee and labor relations, ensuring compliance with employment laws, supporting leaders through complex employee matters, and promoting employee engagement and organizational effectiveness.
This role partners closely with managers, union representatives, and employees to resolve workplace issues, mitigate risk, and build trust in WFS’s people practices. The Employee Relations Manager must maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism while modeling the company’s values.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, providing guidance and support to managers and employees on policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
- Conduct impartial investigations into complaints, grievances, or allegations involving harassment, discrimination, misconduct, or violations of company policy.
- Partner with leadership to identify and address workplace trends, morale concerns, and engagement opportunities.
- Maintain strong working relationships with union officials and ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements; participate in grievance hearings and labor discussions as needed.
- Support HR Director in responding to EEOC, NLRB, and other agency inquiries or investigations.
- Coach managers on effective employee relations practices, conflict resolution, and documentation standards.
- Ensure consistent application of company policies, employment laws, and internal standards across all departments.
- Develop and deliver training for supervisors and employees on topics such as performance management, respectful workplace practices, and employee accountability.
- Collaborate with HR partners to implement performance improvement plans, disciplinary actions, and separations while minimizing risk and maintaining a positive work environment.
- Analyze employee relations metrics and provide insights and recommendations to HR leadership.
- Support company-wide HR initiatives, engagement programs, and policy implementation.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field required; PHR or SHRM-CP certification a plus.
- 5+ years of progressive HR or Employee Relations experience required; experience in aviation, transportation, logistics, or warehouse environments preferred.
- Labor relations experience preferred; experience working with unionized employees and grievance processes strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of employment law, investigations, and workplace compliance.
- Proven ability to manage sensitive employee issues with discretion, fairness, and sound judgment.
- Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and partner with leaders across all levels.
Preferred Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation ability.
- Analytical mindset with ability to identify trends and recommend solutions.
- Team-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel to airport station locations.
- Regular travel required ~30%.
- Frequent use of computer and standard office equipment.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk intermittently throughout the day.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds occasionally.
- Regular and punctual attendance required.
