- Payroll and Benefits Specialist - Hybrid Role

Description:The opportunity:
Working on a dynamic HR team, the Payroll and Benefits Specialist will be responsible for running biweekly payroll for all BetterNight entities and assists with health benefit and retirement plan administration for the company. This is a great role for someone that is looking for a variety of HR and Payroll duties.
What you'll do:
- Processes bi-weekly, multi-state payroll for all employees across multiple entities
- Reviews and validates payroll data to ensure accuracy before each payroll run
- Manages off-cycle payrolls, adjustments, and corrections as needed
- Ensures ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Supports administration of company health benefits and 401(k) retirement plans
- Assists with new hire enrollments, qualifying life events, terminations, and COBRA enrollments
- Ensures garnishments, 401(k) loans, and other deductions are set up accurately in the company HRIS
- Ensures 401(k) contributions and loan payments are submitted on-time and within policy guidelines
- Assists compliance team with new and existing State set ups and withholdings
- Handles filing of quarterly and annual tax forms, partnering with Paylocity
- Maintains accurate employee data in the company HRIS and related systems
- Overall responsibility for ensuring correct setup for positions, people, and data within the company HRIS
- Initiates new hire onboarding and ensures proper set-up of new hire accounts in company HRIS
- Assists with new hire onboarding and department led training
- Leads new hire benefit orientation meetings and assists employees enrolling in all benefits
- Works with benefit broker regarding any benefit issues or changes
- Working with the HRBP, handles employee leave of absences and tracks documents and related time off
- Prepares workbooks and spreadsheets for the 401(k) plan and works with the HRBP and VP of HR to complete audits and annual filings
- Participates in benefit, 401(k), Finance and other audits
- Compiles data and ad-hoc reporting information for the HR department and other managers as needed; including running turnover reports, AAP, EEO, compensation data, investor reports, payroll/accounting, and other reports as requested
- Is the point of contact for Outsolve for running AAP and poster compliance
- Answer employee inquiries regarding HR and Payroll issues promptly, professionally, and politely
- Adheres to strict guidelines keeping information confidential and secure
- Communicates and works in conjunction with all employees, managers and outside vendors as necessary
- Is assigned to or leads HR projects as needed
What we are looking for:
- College degree in related field, or equivalent work experience
- 3-5 years' experience with running biweekly payroll, administrating benefits and working in human resources
- Experience with 401k administration, working with Empower is preferred
- Strong knowledge of California payroll laws, as well as out of state and Federal laws governing payroll and employment practices is required
- Intermediate MS Office computer skills with an emphasis on Excel is required
- Experience with Paylocity is highly preferred
- Must be a self-starter, organized and detail oriented
- Must be able to handle large volumes of data or work and keep track of time sensitive requests
- Payroll or HR certification (FPC, CPP, PHR, SHRM) strongly preferred, but not required
This is a hybrid position that requires a minimum of 2 workdays in the San Diego headquarters office. It is expected that the incumbent will work in the office as business needs dictate.
Compensation
$74,000 - $80,000/year DOE
